Maxim Fedorov is my Russian Prospect of the Month. I only recently came across him, but at just 22 years old, the upside immediately stands out.
On paper, his record suggests a well-rounded finisher — seven KO/TKOs and four submissions, but in reality, Fedorov is a striker first and foremost. His ground game isn’t his strength and, at times, has been a liability. While he can capitalize on submission openings, it’s not his specialty. His takedown defense has shown clear vulnerabilities, and when put on his back, he’s struggled with guard retention and preventing passes. Even in the top position, he can get loose with his control and positioning. That said, he’s young enough to make real improvements — especially if he can shore up his defensive wrestling and keep fights standing.
Where Fedorov truly shines is on the feet. He’s fast, explosive, and dynamic. His footwork sets the tone — constantly switching stances, feinting, and attacking in layers. He throws kicks to all three levels and does a great job working body-to-head combinations with his hands. When he opens up, the combinations are vicious. In close, he fires brutal knees — including flying knees — and generally does a good job getting his head off the centerline, both while pressuring and countering.
I still have questions about his ground development and cardio when pushed into deeper waters. The two times he’s gone the distance, he’s lost on the scorecards. So far during this win streak, he’s been able to dictate the pace. At his age, improvement is expected — and necessary.
Overall, Fedorov is a dangerous, high-upside striker. My concern is the level of competition. Russia’s talent pool is deep, but he’s currently facing opponents with padded or misleading records in smaller promotions. The tools are there — now it’s about development and matchmaking.
