Jonathan Powell
Age: 26
Featherweight
Fighting out of: Los Angeles, California
Cobra Team MMA
Following an impressive victory two weight classes up over Trevon Stubbs Ashley at 559 Fights 120, Jonathan Powell is settling into the biggest year of his career. The Team Cobra MMA fighter has carved out his place on the regional scene and is now looking to secure his second victory of 2026.
Despite being only four fights into his professional career, Powell brings a decorated amateur background. The former Pan-Am IMMAF champion earned wins over three-straight undefeated prospects in a span of just 169 days in 2021, helping him build a 9-1 amateur record before turning pro in 2023.
Having competed across three different weight classes, Powell now returns to featherweight, the division where he found the most success as an amateur, and his blend of strength and athleticism should remain a major advantage there.
Powell really shows off his versatility through his ground game, using strong timing on double-leg takedowns to take control of fights. He’s able to explode through his shots, elevate opponents, and slam them into side control, creating immediate opportunities to finish.
That same athleticism carries over into his striking, where Powell fights out of the southpaw stance and uses a blazing lead right jab along with sharp footwork to enter and exit range effectively.
After one bout under the 559 Fights banner, Powell is already on the move again, this time joining the LFA roster, where he takes on another undefeated prospect in Ezequiel Peralta. For a deeper look at Peralta, check out our guy Drew Beaupre’s article here.
It’s been a quiet rise for Jonathan Powell up to this point, but with the success Team Cobra MMA has been having and Powell’s recent victory at lightweight, the Los Angeles-native is quickly becoming a must-watch prospect.
Keep an eye on this one, as both Powell and Peralta could be fighting for a shot in the next season of Dana White’s Contender Series. LFA 228: Natividad vs. Garcia takes place Friday, March 13, on VICE TV.
