In my opinion, Zion “Black Panther” Silva is the best non-UFC fighter from the Fighting Nerds gym. With not much time spent in MMA, only having fought for a little over a year, he has a ton of experience in Muay Thai. From what I was able to find, he has a record of 37-10, winning multiple titles. Now, he’s an undefeated MMA featherweight at 5-0.
Silva’s striking is built around feints, traps, and setups. A lot of times, you’ll see a subtle hip feint—everyone knows he intends to get the kickboxing going, and that fake of the kick disguises his real attacks. You also know he loves to throw the knees, and he actively knee-feints to force reactions or keep opponents guessing.
My favorite thing he does is switching stances mid-sequence. Silva does it to break the opponent’s rhythm and thought process while opening new angles for himself. It also helps extend combinations and generate more power.
Silva’s commitment to targeting the body has played a significant role in his success. From every angle, he’s hammering the body with jabs, knees, kicks, and teeps, never letting up. He throws with no wasted motion—everything is thought out and delivered with precision.
As your typical Muay Thai fighter, Silva enjoys throwing elbows. He’ll land them on the entry, within combinations, and mix them in seamlessly. In his last bout, he landed a nasty elbow off the break for a spectacular knockout.
Zion Silva is a legitimate prospect who now badly needs a step up in competition. He hasn’t been fighting complete cans, but he’s been in there with guys that have no business being in the cage with him.
