LFA 234 – Who to Watch

LFA 234 – Who to Watch

The Legacy Fighting Alliance has become one of the most important scouting grounds in Brazilian MMA over the past few years. While the promotion continues to develop prospects across North America, its recurring trips to Brazil have consistently delivered some of the country’s best up-and-coming talent, long before they reach the UFC radar. From future contenders to DWCS standouts, LFA has built a reputation for identifying high-level regional fighters and giving them the platform to break out on an international stage.

Friday’s LFA 234 card in Sao Paulo is another strong example of that approach. Beyond the two title fights topping the lineup, the event features a mix of undefeated prospects, aggressive finishers, and experienced regional names looking to make a statement. It’s the kind of card that perfectly reflects why LFA remains essential viewing for anyone following the next generation of Brazilian MMA talent. Here’s who I’m looking forward the most on Fight Night:

Lucas Fernando (12-3) – Light Heavyweight

Lucas Fernando enters LFA 234 as one of the most experienced and battle-tested prospects on the Brazilian regional scene. Despite still being relatively young for his new division’s standards, he has already faced a strong level of opposition. Fighting at light heavyweight, a division that often lacks depth outside the major promotions, Fernando stands out because of his finishing instincts and willingness to push a high pace.

What makes him particularly interesting is the balance in his game. He carries real knockout power, but he is not just a reckless brawler looking for one big shot. Fernando mixes pressure striking with opportunistic grappling and has steadily improved his composure over the last few years. His recent run has shown a much more mature fighter compared to the raw athlete seen earlier in his career.

Light heavyweight remains one of the weakest divisions globally, and fighters capable of producing exciting finishes while maintaining consistency always attract attention quickly. Fernando already has the experience, toughness, and style needed to eventually earn opportunities beyond the regional scene. His game seems really evolved at Light Heavyweight, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get another shot at DWCS if he defends his LHW title successfully comes Friday.

Jefferson Nascimento (12-0) – Lightweight

Few fighters on this card bring as much momentum as Jefferson Nascimento. The undefeated lightweight has steadily built one of the most impressive records among Brazilian regional prospects, combining an unbeaten résumé with a style that consistently produces entertaining fights. At 12-0, he has already crossed the stage where prospects are judged solely on potential. Now, the conversation surrounding him is increasingly about UFC viability, and whether he can become Brazil’s next major lightweight export. Nascimento strength of schedule is really impressive, and he already defended his interim belt once to date.

Nascimento’s game is built around pressure and athleticism. He thrives in chaotic exchanges, pushes a relentless pace, and carries legitimate finishing ability both on the feet and on the ground. What separates him from many aggressive prospects, however, is his confidence under adversity. He rarely looks uncomfortable during wild sequences and seems to grow stronger as fights become messier.

Brazil has historically produced elite lightweight talent, and Nascimento’s undefeated record is impressive, but the eye test matters even more here. He fights with urgency, hunts finishes, and has the kind of style that instantly grabs attention from major organizations. If he keeps developing technically while maintaining the same aggression, he has the tools to become far more than just another solid regional lightweight. He’ll try to defend his Interim Lightweight Title against the tough Gian Maurente.

Gian Maurente (9-1) – Lightweight

Still only 23 years old, “The White Dragon” already owns a 9-1 professional record and has rapidly emerged as one of the most intriguing young lightweights fighting outside the major promotions, and one of the most well-known Uruguayans on the regional scene. He’s been the Samurai Fight House Lightweight Champion since February 2025.

Maurente’s appeal starts with his finishing ability. Every win of his professional career has come inside the distance, split between knockouts and submissions, which immediately tells you the kind of fighter he is. He fights aggressively, constantly looks to create scrambles, and rarely wastes time trying to coast through rounds. That finishing mentality has helped him become one of the more entertaining prospects currently competing in South America.

What makes him especially interesting is his youth combined with his composure. Many young fighters with aggressive styles tend to overextend or lose discipline in exchanges, but Maurente often looks surprisingly calm during chaotic moments. There is still technical polishing needed, particularly defensively, yet the raw tools are clearly there. Nascimento will be his toughest challenge yet and Maurente will be a huge underdog Friday, but he can make the biggest jump of his career if he can catch Nascimento.

Reginaldo Junior (11-1) – Welterweight

Reginaldo Junior might be the most dangerous pure finisher on the entire card. Fighting out of the renowned Fighting Nerds camp in Brazil, “The Beast” has rapidly become one of the standouts of the LFA in the region thanks to his explosive style and highlight-reel stoppages.

The first thing that stands out with Junior is his physicality. He explodes into combinations, throws with real intent, and carries the kind of power that can instantly change fights. Yet, there is more depth to his game than just knockout ability. He has shown dangerous grappling instincts as well, including slick submission skills when opponents try to survive the pressure. That dual-threat ability makes him particularly difficult to prepare for. His come-from-behind win in his last bout against Natan Mota was one of the craziest endings to a fight in 2025.

Training with Fighting Nerds has also become a major stamp of credibility in modern MMA. The gym’s rapid rise has produced multiple elite-level fighters, and Junior benefits from an environment known for aggressive pressure, cardio, and offensive creativity. His style reflects that perfectly.

Since losing against fellow prospect Richard Martins back in 2023, he has responded exactly how you want a serious prospect to respond: by improving, staying active, and building momentum with increasingly-impressive performances. The welterweight division is always crowded globally, but athletes who combine violence, athleticism, and finishing instincts tend to separate themselves quickly. Junior absolutely belongs in that category.

Douglas da Lapa (5-0) – Middleweight

Douglas da Lapa is still early in his professional journey, but he already feels like the exact type of prospect LFA loves to showcase before the rest of the MMA world catches on. Undefeated at 5-0, the Brazilian middleweight represents the newer generation of regional fighters who are entering MMA with increasingly-complete skill sets, rather than relying heavily on a single discipline.

What immediately stands out with da Lapa is his physical presence for the division. He fights with confidence, presses forward comfortably, and looks composed in exchanges despite his limited professional experience. Like many promising Brazilian prospects, he blends aggressive striking, constantly trying to force opponents into uncomfortable situations rather than fighting cautiously.

Middleweight has become a division where the UFC is scouting the hardest on the regional scene globally, which makes prospects like da Lapa particularly interesting to follow. The margin between simply being undefeated and becoming a high-level prospect is smaller than many people think. So far, however, da Lapa has passed the eye test. He looks athletic, dangerous, and willing to take risks offensively.

De Lapa hasn’t fought anyone of note as of now, but his next opponent is a 12-fight veteran, so we might have some early answers on De Lapa comes Friday.

Eduardo Dutra (6-0) – Featherweight

Eduardo Dutra stands out in the Brazilian featherweight scene not just for his undefeated record, but for the quality and maturity of his grappling. His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is already considered exceptional for his age and experience level, with sharp transitions, strong positional awareness, and a clear ability to create finishing opportunities once the fight hits the mat. He is particularly dangerous in scrambles, where he reads reactions quickly and chains attacks with real fluidity.

The main question surrounding Dutra is how effectively he can round out the rest of his game. His offensive grappling is a major weapon, but taking the next step toward elite prospect status will require becoming a more complete MMA fighter, particularly in striking defense, cage craft, and managing range exchanges before initiating takedowns.

If he continues developing his stand-up while maintaining his high-level grappling identity, Dutra has the tools to become a serious international prospect, rather than just a strong regional finisher.

Honorable Mentions

Mateus Soares (10-2) – Bantamweight

Mateus Soares enters LFA 234 as another example of the depth currently found in Brazilian bantamweight MMA. With 12 professional fights already under his belt, he brings valuable experience compared to many developing prospects on the regional scene. Soares is an aggressive and durable fighter who thrives in high-paced exchanges, often forcing opponents into uncomfortable fights. While bantamweight remains one of the toughest divisions globally, his combination of activity, toughness, and offensive pressure makes him a worthwhile name to keep an eye on moving forward.

Icaro Brito (8-2) – Featherweight

Icaro Brito will try to build momentum back after setbacks his last time around. He’s an entertaining featherweight prospect with a style built for modern MMA audiences. Athletic, aggressive, and willing to chase finishes, Brito has become a consistent action fighter on the Brazilian regional scene. He remains somewhat raw technically, but the physical tools and finishing instincts are clearly there for future growth.

Lincon Santos (9-3) – Flyweight

Lincon Santos adds further intrigue to an already strong flyweight lineup at LFA 234. Despite suffering a few defeats earlier in his career, Santos has continued evolving and remains a dangerous, aggressive fighter capable of creating scrambles and fast-paced exchanges. Flyweight often rewards activity and adaptability, two qualities he has consistently shown throughout his regional run. With a dozen professional fights already completed, Santos brings a level of experience that could make him a difficult test for anyone in the division moving forward.

Jean Sevalho (8-1) – Flyweight

Jean Sevalho is a quietly solid flyweight prospect who continues to build momentum on the Brazilian regional circuit. At 8-1, he has shown consistency, composure, and a well-rounded skill set that fits the modern demands of the division. Sevalho is technically sound on the feet, but his biggest strength is his ability to stay calm in scrambles and maintain structure under pressure. While he may not be the flashiest prospect on the card, his steady development and reliable fundamentals make him a fighter worth tracking closely as he continues to mature.
