Welcome to the UFC: Anthony Romero

Getting his UFC debut on a numbered card is Anthony “The Bull” Romero. He’s coming off his last performance, winning the UNF bantamweight championship, and improving his record to 7-2-1. The 29-year-old lives in Los Angeles, California, and trains out of Black House MMA. Romero is 3-1 with 1 No Contest in his last five fights.

Romero has the style you’d want to bet on but not take a loan out on. If Romero is fighting someone who doesn’t specialize in a certain area, he’s gotta a chance against anyone. The clear path against Romero is to get him to the ground. He has two submission wins, but his ground game is nothing to write home about. He’s been taken down by lesser guys and struggles off his back.

Even on the feet, where he’s at his best, he does get hit too much. Romero does a fine job of moving his head but isn’t consistent. His best weapon is his boxing. Romero throws in combinations and hardly takes a step back. He slows down pretty quickly but stays on the gas. He has a strong jab that he leads with and opens up with combinations as he gets more confident. Although I’d like to see him do it more, he does mix up his targets, especially when blood is in the water. As the fight goes on, he gets looser, and his vision is on point. He’s one of those guys who gets better when he gets dropped.

Romero beats guys with cardio issues and other strikers that lack power. Ultimately, Romero is only gonna get so far with major defensive concerns. Against McGhee, I think McGhee is too crafty and seasoned to allow himself to be dragged into a firefight. I got McGhee by second-round submission.
