Featherweight, Oneal Thompson (Versus Fight Night 19, Saturday)
Oneal Thompson is an emerging prospect from South Africa chasing big goals early in his career. He trains out of CIT MMA alongside notable fighters like Bokang Masunyane from ONE Championship and UFC bantamweight Cameron Saaiman.
Thompson began competing at just 19 years old and wrapped up his amateur career undefeated at 5–0 by the age of 20. Before MMA, he was a seven-time national kickboxing champion.
On the feet, he’s a solid kickboxer, but his grappling is where he really shines. Thompson uses his length effectively to control opponents on the mat while constantly hunting submissions. He’s also a strong scrambler who stays dangerous throughout grappling exchanges.
All of his amateur wins have come via submission, with his finishes largely stemming from dangerous front-choke attacks.
Middleweight, Chiril Negru (FNC 30, Saturday)
The long-awaited pro debut of Chiril Negru is finally here. Negru built a strong amateur résumé, going 14-2 while winning both an IMMAF World Championship and an IMMAF European Championship. Born in Slovenia, he now trains out of Germany at UFD Gym alongside several high-level fighters.
The biggest concern surrounding Negru is durability. Both of his amateur losses came by knockout in under 20 seconds. They were against quality opposition, but it’s still something that raises questions heading into the professional ranks. If the chin issues are legitimate, it would be unfortunate because Negru is a genuinely skilled fighter.
On the feet, he puts combinations together well, fires a blistering one-two, and mixes in a wide variety of kicks. His wrestling may be his best attribute, though. Negru can secure takedowns in multiple ways, whether in open space or through chain wrestling exchanges. Once he gets his hands locked, he’s aggressive and physical, showing a willingness to launch opponents with suplexes. He also utilizes trips effectively and has solid judo fundamentals.
Ten of his amateur wins came by decision, which suggests he isn’t overly focused on chasing finishes. Even so, he stays active and works consistently rather than stalling in the top position. I rate at least four of his amateur wins highly, and that alone makes him an intriguing prospect to watch entering his pro career.
