Shawn Bitter- Women’s bantamweight is bare, so why not bring both straight to the UFC? Bierley is a fine fighter—not great anywhere, but fine everywhere. In a bakery sense, the edges are done, but the middle isn’t set. Her striking is decent but repetitive, mainly working a jab and left hook. Her wrestling is solid, but her setups and ground control can be lacking.
Onley is a special talent and someone I feel confident about. She fights with confidence, has excellent footwork and fight IQ, and does all the basics well. Her jab is meaningful, she mixes up her targets, and she’s accurate fighting off the back foot. The ground game is still a question, but I think Bierley will be too plodding to consistently set up her takedowns.
Pick: Onley by Round 2 KO/TKO
Cedric Dumas- This is probably the most interesting matchup on the card from a pure prospect perspective.
Onley has been easier to evaluate because Full Contact Contender has consistently put her in meaningful fights. She has championship experience, a strong finishing record, and a clinch game that already looks more developed than what you normally see from regional fighters at this stage. Her physicality also makes her striking feel bigger than her 5’7″ frame.
Bierley is not simply there to give Onley another win, though. Five straight victories and three finishes during that run show a fighter who has developed into a well-rounded threat. Onley has no obvious shortcuts here.
The separator is the quality of opposition. Onley has been beating better women, and that matters when you’re trying to project how someone will handle the jump to DWCS. Bierley has enough tools to make this competitive, but Onley has already shown more against the level of fighter I expect to matter here.
I expect a competitive three-round fight, with Onley doing enough in the clinch and at range to secure the decision.
Pick: Onley by Decision
Nicholas Holt- I’m a big fan of Summer Onley, and this is a great matchup for her to showcase her skills. She’s a talented striker with a great jab, and her opponent, Alivia Bierley, should be a willing dance partner. Bierley is a solid prospect herself and is coming off back-to-back finishes, but I don’t think she has the power to trade with Onley in a striking match. Should be a fun one.
Pick: Onley by Round 2 KO/TKO
Xavi Ryder– We end off week nine with FCC champion Summer Onley taking on who I believe was originally supposed to be Bella Mir’s Contender Series opponent, Alivia Bierley. Funny enough, she holds an amateur win over the woman who beat Mir, Alex Apodaca. These are two very well-rounded fighters, and with how thin women’s bantamweight is, it would be cool to see both of them in the UFC. Unfortunately, they have to fight each other on Tuesday, and I think Onley has Bierley covered everywhere. On the feet, she controls range better and has the slicker hands. On the ground, she will be able to handle Bierley and defend takedowns. Most of Onley’s wins have come inside the distance, but Bierley isn’t a pushover, so I think this goes the distance.
Pick: Onley by Decision
Drew Beaupre– Given the current state of the promotion’s women’s bantamweight division, the UFC would probably benefit from offering contracts to both of these women.
Olney is the flashier fighter on paper, boasting five finishes out of her seven pro outings with Full Contact Contender. A confident striker with a solid jab and footwork, “Ice Cold” does a good job of mixing up her targets and also works well from the clinch, while Bierly is a decent striker but is a bit more one-note in her approach on the feet.
The big question mark around Olney is her ground game, but while Bierly does have the wrestling advantage, I’m not sure if she’ll be able to exploit that with how overmatched she’s going to be on the feet.
Pick: Olney by Round 3 KO/TKO
Cangrejo Ruiz- Honestly, given the state of the women’s bantamweight division, I would sign these two girls directly; they are decent enough. Both girls try to apply pressure and struggle to back it up, so it should be interesting. I trust Bierley more; she is more dangerous on the feet and has a real takedown threat. Onley is a decent grappler, but she’ll struggle with Bierley’s wrestling.
Pick: Bierley by Decision
Benjamin Keith- As others have touched on, I believe both of these women are good enough to be directly signed to the UFC. “Yum Yum” Bierely is a natural athlete that had a good amateur run before turning pro. Her striking is basic but has good power that can punish girls with bad standup defense. With that said she might have to lean on her grappling here if she’s to get the best of Onley. Onley is a crisp striker and a bit of a knock off Dakota Ditcheva. She picks her spots well, and works her striking at all three levels. While the betting lines don’t agree this fight is razor thin. Both women are too tough and too talented for anyone to find a finish here, and I can’t shake the feeling we get another upset in a DWCS women’s main event.
Pick: Bierely by Decision
