UFC Baku: Nascimento vs Abdullayev Breakdown

Debutant vs. debutant has been quite the theme for the UFC as of late, with last weekend showcasing the additions of four new fighters to the roster. This Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan, another pair of hopefuls will make the walk for the first time under the promotion’s banner as Jefferson “Toddynho” Nascimento takes on hometown representative Tahir “Tank” Abdullayev.

Both fighters carry experience and momentum into their UFC debuts, though the circumstances couldn’t be more different. Nascimento makes the trip overseas shortly after competing in a grueling title fight, while Abdullayev gets the benefit of preparation on home soil. Here’s how I see this matchup playing out:

Why Jefferson Nascimento will win:

Undefeated through thirteen fights, Jefferson “Toddynho” Nascimento enters his UFC career riding high after defeating Gian Maurente for the LFA interim lightweight title. A former Shooto product, Nascimento built his early résumé on the Brazilian regional circuit before making the jump to LFA in 2022. Now, four years later, Nascimento travels over 7,000 miles from his MMA debut to Baku, Azerbaijan.

The 27-year-old offers a well-rounded offensive arsenal with five knockouts and three submissions to his name, most recently finishing Maurente in the fourth round with a stinging body kick. An absolute war between the two lightweights, Nascimento left the fight carrying a few marks, including a cut above his left eye. Perhaps it’s nothing, but “Toddynho” will enter his matchup with Tahir Abdullayev slightly banged up 29 days removed from his title bout.

Nascimento can’t pass up the opportunity to make the walk under the UFC banner, though he’ll have to fight smarter than he did against Maurente. Abdullayev is a difficult fighter to hurt, with two of his three losses coming by decision. The Brazilian will need to take a measured approach to the octagon, staying defensively responsible while picking apart his opposition with straight punches and body kicks. The last thing the undefeated Nascimento should welcome is a brawl; it’s no secret he’s making a quick turnaround. If “Toddynho” can find a way to the scorecards and maintain volume against Abdullayev, the Rio de Janeiro native should get his hand raised.

Why Tahir Abdullayev will win:

Tahir Abdullayev couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to make his debut, as the Baku native will look to defend home turf come this Saturday. After stops in five different promotions over his last five fights, Tahir “Tank” Abdullayev has finally found a home in the UFC.

Abdullayev joins the promotion with a hot hand, finishing four consecutive opponents on the ground, three of them inside the opening five minutes. “Tank” has a clear game plan once the fight hits the mat: relentless pressure in pursuit of an early finish. The 29-year-old has already secured nine knockouts and seven submissions across 21 victories, and it’s hard to imagine this fight playing out much differently.

It’ll be roughly a month removed from going through a war with Maurente, and Tahir Abdullayev will need to apply pressure early, attacking any vulnerabilities Nascimento may carry into fight week. Abdullayev could find success targeting the cut above Nascimento’s eye, but he’ll need to get to his opponent quickly and avoid the late stages of the fight. Neither man holds a height advantage, as both fighters stand at 5’8”, but Abdullayev has been the more natural welterweight throughout his career. If “Tank” can get physical and impose his will early, Tahir Abdullayev should find a finish within the opening two rounds.

Final Prediction:

Jefferson Nascimento was just a few ground strikes away from being finished in the third round of his last appearance, and only 29 days will have passed when both fighters make the walk at Baku’s National Gymnastics Arena this Saturday. Moving up a weight class should help Nascimento from a wear-and-tear standpoint, but I expect Tahir Abdullayev to be the fresher athlete come fight night. The combination of a long flight and a grueling war last month makes it difficult for me to confidently select Nascimento. My pick: Tahir Abdullayev by TKO in round one or two.
